Day 6: Ultimate Favorite Fight: Rock Lee [+Gaara] versus Kimimaro

This was just… an awesome fight.  I remember being blown away in the manga, and then when the anime caught up being blown away by that too.  It was the introduction of drunkenfist Rock Lee, which wasn’t just badass it was hilarious, and Gaara’s appearance was equally impressive.

For an arc which was mostly just a string of semiconnected fights, this was in my opinion the best fight.  Kimimaro was probably the most memorable villain this arc introduced, and a filler background didn’t hurt.  It wasn’t the most dramatic fight of the arc, but it could be taken as the emotional conclusion to the other fight I considered for this spot, Gaara vs Lee- a showcase of how Rock Lee managed to rebound from his crippling injuries and gave redemption for Gaara. 

It even managed to be a good hint on the way Gaara and the Suna in general would go- Gaara as a beloved hokage and the Suna as an ally.  It also managed to slip in some Narutoish themes, the idea of loneliness and how you defend that person that helped you overcome it whether or good or not (Gaara’s line being the best quote, “A person can’t defeat loneliness”).  Kimimaro’s end was especially sad as he did his best for Orochimaru and his love, and Orochimaru expressed apathy to his fate.
